Dear Mountain Families,

Our "Drive for Schools" fundraiser is well underway. Students met the goal of raising at least $1000 last week so they have earned 10 minutes of extra recess!

Our goal for week 2 is $3000 total! If we meet our goal we will have another extra recess and a dress-up/PJ Day! Pearl, Eliza and Emry from 4th grade raised $874 this weekend selling at the Farmer's Market and on Pleasure Point (photos shared with parent permission).

100% of the proceeds from every ticket sold stays at Mountain Elementary and goes to support our Visual and Performing Arts programs.

Thank you for getting in your yellow NSLP forms. We had a great turn-in rate. If you haven't had the chance to bring it in, please do so at your convenience or complete it online through the online registration forms (linked below!)

I'm looking forward to another fantastic week at Mountain School!

Warm regards,

Megan Tresham

Annual Back to School Forms Now Online
Working together with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, our annual Back to School forms are now available online. We need each student to be registered as "new" even if they've been at Mountain for many years. This way all the data in our new SIS will be up to date and without errors. Please create an account and complete the forms.

The section for California Eligibility Application refers to our bright yellow NSLP form. If you have already submitted the paper version of this form (Thank you!) or plan to do so, please check the box "Fill out at school site".

If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Loveless rloveless@mountainesd.org

Please use this LINK to complete these forms.
Aliveah
Staff Spotlight: Aliveah Robertson, Kindergarten Teacher
Hello everyone! I am Aliveah Robertson and I am excited to be teaching Kindergarten this year! I love to hike and explore nature. I have just started a super fun hobby of geocaching this summer as well (which is kind of like a treasure hunt)! I also enjoy photography, playing guitar, crocheting, and other various crafting projects! I am very passionate about teaching and spend lots of time in the classroom. I love helping children learn though play and seeing their growth and progress. I look forward to seeing you on campus!
Student Health and Wellness
The back to school season is my favorite time of year. The weather is great, students are excited to be back on campus and in classrooms and we can get back to our regular routines. Unfortunately, this season also brings with it coughs, colds, the flu and head lice. Here are a few reminders about how we handle these very common ailments and what we nees families to do in order to minimize the spread of germs, etc.

  1. Please do NOT send your child to school if they have a fever, have vomited in the past 24 hours, have diarrhea, have an unidentified rash or any communicable illness. If your child has a contagious illness, including lice, scabies, strep throat, measles, chicken pox or COVID, please keep them home and report the condition to the office immediately. Students must be 24 hours fever free without medicine before returning to school.
  2. Please do not medicate your child and send them to school in hopes that they make it through the day. More often than not, their symptoms return and they tell us they have been sick. We understand that taking time off of work to tend to a sick child can be difficult and inconvenient, but when you send them sick you put their whole class, teacher and the office staff at risk of catching what they have.
  3. If you child is ill and comes to the office, we will call you as soon as possible. If we can't reach you we will move down the emergency contacts you've provided, depending on the severity of the illness. Occasionally there are tummy aches that come up during certain subjects in class. In these cases we wait a bit to see if the student can return.
  4. If your student is scratching their head significantly or there are visible lice, we will do a hair check and call you ASAP. We don't perform whole class screenings or hair checks, and for privacy reasons, we don't send whole class notifications when a student has lice. Here's more information on treating lice: https://www.cdc.gov/lice/treatment/index.html

MESD Board of Trustees Candidates Needed
This year, we have three vacant positions on the School Board and we are looking for candidates to serve as a trustee. Trustees provide a vital component to the management of a school district, helping provide public input and transparency in our community.

Serving as a School Board Trustee means attending our regular board meetings once a month, reviewing information about the meeting, and attending regular meetings with the Superintendent to keep informed on the district between meetings.

If you are interested in serving, applications are available in the office or by emailing Superintendent Tresham directly. To be eligible, applicants must live in the Mountain Elementary School District, must be a registered voter, must be a citizen of the state, and not otherwise disqualified from holding a civil office.

Applications are due in the office by 4 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2024. Interviews will be held at the October 10, 2024 Board Meeting. After conducting the interviews in open session, the Board will finalize their selection and make the provisional appointment.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions about the positions or nature of the role.
Volunteers
Volunteers are an important part of our school community and there are so many things that would not happen without their help.

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom or on field trips and have gone through the fingerprinting/live scan process for Mluntain Elementary in a previous school year, please complete the RETURNING VOLUNTEER FORM.

If you are new to Mountain or have never completed fingerprints/live scan for our school, please fill out the NEW VOLUNTEER APPLICATION.

No volunteer may participate in any class activity or field trip without first completing this appication and all required steps listed therein. This includes parents who only plan to drive their students. Thanks for your support.
