Dear Mountain Families,

You and your students are CRUSHING our "Drive for Schools" fundraiser! We met our goal of raising at least $3000 total last week so we will have extra recess and Pajama Day on Thursday 10/3.

100% of the proceeds from every ticket sold stays at Mountain Elementary and goes to support our Visual and Performing Arts programs.

Thanks for your support!
Warm regards,

Megan Tresham
Soquel VIllage Road Closures 10/4
Soquel High School is having their Homecoming Parade on Friday, 10/4 from 1-2:30 p.m. The roads in and around Soquel Village will be closed, preventing access to Old San Jose Rd. and Mountain Elementary. This will mainly impact pick-up of our TK and Kindergarten students. Parents are welcome to pick-up their students early on Friday. We will also offer extended supervision for students until the roads are open and you are able to get to campus. If you have any questions, please reach out!

Bay/Porter Traffic Detours
The southbound Bay/Porter onramp to High 1 is closing for 2 months. There will be detours in place. This is bound to create increased traffic in the area and may increase drive time to Mountain. Please plan accordingly.

Staff Spotlight: Megan Tresham, Superintendent/Principal
I am thrilled to be in my 4th year as Superintendent/Principal at Mountain Elementary School District.

I grew up in Gilroy, California (Garlic Capital of the World!) My mom and grandparents were educators and my dad was a firefighter. I attended UC Santa Cruz where I majored in History and Modern Literary Studies. It's also where I met my husband, Kevin.

I got my first job teaching High School English the summer after college graduation. I taught at the high school I had graduated from 4 years earlier. I took a brief hiatus from teaching when our children Kalen and Mason were born.

When I was ready to return to work I decided to shift my path just a bit. During my teaching tenure I often felt limited in my ability to support students outside the classroom. So many of my students we're struggling outside of school, and these issues were preventing them from being successful in school. Rather than continue teaching, I obtained a Pupil Personnel Services Credential and a Masters in School Counseling. I worked for 15 years at a small high school in Santa Cruz as a counselor and principal as well as an elementary school counselor. My work as a counselor allowed me to support students in ways that made it possible for them to access their education in ways they couldn't before.

My role at Mountain has afforded me to opportunity to continue working in a small school environment where I can get to know every student and their family. I love being able to greet every kid by name and to learn about their interests and passions.

When I'm not at school I love spending time with my now (mostly) grown kids, my husband and pup, as well as riding my mountain bike, running an walking in Pleasure Point and visiting my favorite restaurants, breweries and coffee shops in town.
Shout Outs
Have you got a story to share about a staff member at Mountain who went above and beyond? Please consider sending in a Shout Out so we can recognize them for their exemplary efforts! I'll share a few in my newsletters each week.

REQUIRED Student Information Forms Now Online
Working together with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, our annual Student Information forms are now available online. We need each student to be registered as "new" even if they've been at Mountain for many years. This way all the data in our new SIS will be up to date and without errors. Please create an account and complete the forms ASAP! The information you provide ensure that we have up to date contact and emergency information, student health data, and qualifies us for important state funding. We need EVERY family to complete these forms!

The section for California Eligibility Application refers to our bright yellow NSLP form. If you have already submitted the paper version of this form (Thank you!) or plan to do so, please check the box "Fill out at school site".

If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Loveless rloveless@mountainesd.org

Please use this LINK to complete these forms.

MESD Board of Trustees Candidates Needed
This year, we have three vacant positions on the School Board and we are looking for candidates to serve as a trustee. Trustees provide a vital component to the management of a school district, helping provide public input and transparency in our community.

Serving as a School Board Trustee means attending our regular board meetings once a month, reviewing information about the meeting, and attending regular meetings with the Superintendent to keep informed on the district between meetings.

If you are interested in serving, applications are available in the office or by emailing Superintendent Tresham directly. To be eligible, applicants must live in the Mountain Elementary School District, must be a registered voter, must be a citizen of the state, and not otherwise disqualified from holding a civil office.

Applications are due in the office by 4 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2024. Interviews will be held at the October 10, 2024 Board Meeting. After conducting the interviews in open session, the Board will finalize their selection and make the provisional appointment.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions about the positions or nature of the role.
Volunteers
Volunteers are an important part of our school community and there are so many things that would not happen without their help.

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom or on field trips and have gone through the fingerprinting/live scan process for Mluntain Elementary in a previous school year, please complete the RETURNING VOLUNTEER FORM.

If you are new to Mountain or have never completed fingerprints/live scan for our school, please fill out the NEW VOLUNTEER APPLICATION.

No volunteer may participate in any class activity or field trip without first completing this appication and all required steps listed therein. This includes parents who only plan to drive their students. Thanks for your support.
