Week 10 Newsletter
October 7-11, 2024

Dear Mountain Families,

We did not quite meet our Drive for Schools fundraising goal last week. This week we're hoping to raise a combined total of $12,000. If we do this, the kids get extra recess + dress-up/PJ day + popsicle party..... and they get to watch me eat crickets!! Please don't tell the students, but when they're covered in chocolate, they're not that bad :) 100% of the proceeds from every ticket sold stays at Mountain Elementary and goes to support our Visual and Performing Arts programs.

Picture day is coming. All students will have their photo taken and you will be sent a proof and info on how to purchase.

We are still getting a lot of questions about the requirements to participate in field trips. Even if you only plan to drive your own student you MUST be fingerprinted. Please review the detailed information below if you have further questions.

Students in TK, Kinder, 2nd and 5th grade will have their hearing and vision screened on Monday and Tuesday of this week by our nurse, Vicky Grisham. 1st grade will have hearing only screening unless they are new to Mountain. If there are any concerns with the results of the screenings you will be notified. In California, schools are REQUIRED to conduct hearing and vision screenings.

Thanks for your support!
Warm regards,

Megan Tresham
Melissa Beckman
Staff Spotlight: Melissa Beckman, 2nd Grade Teacher
Mountain Elementary is thrilled to have Melissa Beckman on our team of incredible educators. Here's a little more about Melissa:
I am a 2nd grade teacher at Mountain School.
I am a mother to the sweetest little boy, named Calvin.
I am a partner to an outstanding educator and wonderful man, Portlan.
I am a life-long student, practicing heated yoga and meditation, as well as stained glass art, painting, and gardening.
I am an adventurer, camping - sometimes climbing - and exploring the incredible outdoors.
I am a human that is so grateful to get to know and discover new things with your child this school year.
As an adult, I remember 3 things from my experience in 2nd grade. I remember an incredible science experiment, the short story that I wrote and was beyond proud of - named “Bobby the Cat” - and the way my teacher made me feel. My ultimate goal and hope for my future students is that when they are grown, they will look back and remember how encouraged, supported, challenged, accepted, and loved they were.

Fun Fact: Ms. Beckman's Great Aunt attended Mountain in the 1950s!!!

Mountain Elementary Shout Outs
This week's shout outs go to.....

Ms. Shauna for being in many places, being attentive, and putting time and efforts in so many ways that support our campus community!

and......

Axel in 5th grade for working so hard on student posture and finding the joy in fractions...

and......

Amadeo in 1st grade for all his efforts to improve his reading and for being such a motivated student...

and finally...

Ms. Beckman and the ENTIRE 2nd grade (including head coffee pourer Lindsey Torres) for bringing coffee to the staff and learning a multitude of math lessons in the process. We appreciate the coffee and the hard work!

Have you got a story to share about a staff member or student at Mountain who went above and beyond? Please consider sending in a Shout Out so we can recognize them for their exemplary efforts! I'll share a few in my newsletters each week.

Bay/Porter Traffic Detours
The southbound Bay/Porter onramp to High 1 is closing for 2 months. There will be detours in place. This is bound to create increased traffic in the area and may increase drive time to Mountain. Please plan accordingly.
REQUIRED Student Information Forms Now Online
Working together with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, our annual Student Information forms are now available online. We need each student to be registered as "new" even if they've been at Mountain for many years. This way all the data in our new SIS will be up to date and without errors. Please create an account and complete the forms ASAP! The information you provide ensure that we have up to date contact and emergency information, student health data, and qualifies us for important state funding. We need EVERY family to complete these forms!

The section for California Eligibility Application refers to our bright yellow NSLP form. If you have already submitted the paper version of this form (Thank you!) or plan to do so, please check the box "Fill out at school site".

If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Loveless rloveless@mountainesd.org

Please use this LINK to complete these forms.

Volunteers
Volunteers are an important part of our school community and there are so many things that would not happen without their help.

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom or on field trips and have gone through the fingerprinting/live scan process for Mluntain Elementary in a previous school year, please complete the RETURNING VOLUNTEER FORM.

If you are new to Mountain or have never completed fingerprints/live scan for our school, please fill out the NEW VOLUNTEER APPLICATION.

No volunteer may participate in any class activity or field trip without first completing this appication and all required steps listed therein. This includes parents who only plan to drive their students. Thanks for your support.
